A huge crowd recently gathered at Saint Joseph Martin, Martin, KY, to celebrate the installation of new digital mammography equipment. The hospital’s digital mammography suite was also named in honor of Chandra Varia, MD, and Mahendra Varia, DVM. The Varias made an initial donation of $125,000 to the capital campaign that raised money for the equipment.
“This capital campaign has been a very humbling experience,” said Kathy Stumbo, president of Saint Joseph Martin. “Our community has been so generous and we are very pleased that we have the most up-to-date digital mammography for our patients.”
Chandra Varia, an obstetrician and gynecologist, has been affiliated with Saint Joseph Martin since 1979. In addition to funding for the digital mammography equipment, the Varias’ philanthropy includes working with area institutions of higher learning to provide scholarships for the 3,400 babies Chandra delivered from 1979 through 1993.
