Creighton University Medical Center (CUMC), Omaha, NE, part of Alegent Creighton Health, is one of only two hospitals in the country recognized by the Joint Commission for management of orthopedic trauma. CUMC earned The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval by demonstrating compliance with national standards for health care quality and safety in disease-specific care. A multidisciplinary team at CUMC oversaw staff training activities while developing a standardized, evidence-based orthopedic trauma order set along with many other process improvement projects. During an onsite review, a Joint Commission expert interviewed staff and patients and evaluated CUMC for compliance with standards of care, including infection prevention and control, leadership and medication management. Along with its Gold Seal of Approval for orthopedic trauma, CUMC received certificates of distinction for its management of knee and hip replacement.
