Sponsorship is an important concept in Catholic health care. It refers to the unique relationship of oversight and support between a health care facility and a group that is committed to advancing the health care ministry of Jesus. Traditionally, Catholic health care facilities have been sponsored by religious congregations.
Catholic Health Initiatives has a new and groundbreaking model of sponsorship. This model entrusts sponsorship as well as governance of our facilities to the Board of Stewardship Trustees, which is an equal religious and lay partnership. This precedent-setting structure made Catholic Health Inititiaves the first Catholic health system in the United States to give lay people a role in the sponsorship of its facilities.
This sponsorship model was part of the vision of the ten congregations of women religious who first engaged in dialog that led to the formation of Catholic Health Initiatives. The Board and Members, who represent the congregations, have clarified how this model shapes the roles, behaviors and activities of the lay and religious sponsors of Catholic Health Initiatives.
