Kathleen D. Sanford, DBA, RN, CENP, FACHE
Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer
Sanford joined CHI in November 2006 and is responsible for quality and patient safety, clinical operating improvement, leadership development of clinicians, and clinical information technology. She also leads evidenced-based practice initiatives across CHI’s continuum of care.
Sanford has more than 35 years of experience in health care, including staff nursing, middle management, chief nurse executive, and hospital administrator roles. A former Army nurse, she retired as chief nurse of the Washington Army National Guard.
She has served in leadership positions for numerous community and charitable organizations and has been an adjunct faculty member for The University of Washington and Pacific Lutheran University. She is a past president of AONE and currently a member of the American Hospital Association Board of Trustees. As a former newspaper health care columnist and author for multiple publications, she has published more than 100 articles and the management book, “Leading With Love.”
Sanford’s education includes a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Maryland/Walter Reed Army Institute of Nursing, a master’s degree in Human Resources Management from Pepperdine University, a master’s degree in business administration from Pacific Lutheran University, and a doctorate in business from Nova Southeastern University.
